About the foundation
The Pasqual Maragall Foundation for Research into Alzheimer’s was founded in April 2008, in response to the commitment made by Pasqual Maragall (former Mayor of Barcelona and ex-President of the Catalan Government) after announcing publicly that he had been diagnosed with this disease.
Headed by Dr. Jordi Camí, professor of the Pompeu Fabra University, driving force and also director of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), the foundation is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to promote, encourage and give support to scientific research in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative diseases, such that its achievements may be instrumental in the prevention, treatment and cure of these diseases. The foundation is a centre affiliated to the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.
Objectives:
- To develop an innovative research model in Spain, based on non-conventional projects and inspired by “high risk/high reward” research, in line with other cutting edge international initiatives.
- To drive a new leadership of the private sector in the field of biomedical research, promoting the effective involvement of private investors and sponsors in the financing of these scientific research and innovation projects.
- To publicise and promote awareness-raising in collaboration with other initiatives and organisations, and to promote scientific research as a strategic priority.
Resources:
Pasqual Maragall Foundation’s core concept for scientific research is based on a mixed structure of private-public funding, by creating partnerships with the private sector channeled through philanthropic contributions and investments.
To this end, the foundation is establishing its own fund, the International Alzheimer’s Fund, which will incorporate monetary donations, gifts and subscriptions, as well as future investments in in-house R&D programmes. This fund can be complemented with public resources and subsidies from the public administrations and the European Funds.
